Yesterday, we went to the Bloemenmarkt, which is the world’s only floating flower market. Founded in 1862, it includes 15 florists and garden shops as well as a range of souvenir gifts and is one of the main suppliers of flowers to central Amsterdam.
The stores themselves are half onland, half on floating barges.
We then walked over to Albert Cuyp Market, the largest street market in Amsterdam.
The market, which began trading in 1904, now has over 300 stalls lining both sides of Albert Cuyp street in the neighbourhood of De Pijp. Stalls sell everything from fruit, vegetables, cheese, fish and spices to clothes, cosmetics and bedding.
We got ourselves some stroopwafel, a waffle with caramel syrup in the middle and dipped in chocolate. Mmm!
At some point, we are going to need to eat raw herring, which is a specialty here, but we are putting that off until Copenhagen. Don’t worry- it’s going to happen though!
